Does SXSW Still Matter? [SXSW]

There's a famous photo from SxSW taken 10 years ago, with just about every significant blogger at the time all gathered around one table. Many of them went on to form incredibly influential companies, like Flickr, Twitter, and yes, Gawker. Today, a lot of those same people are skipping the conference. And if you believe the backlash, South by Southwest has lost its cool. It's just a marketing hypefest, where the most common achievement is barbecue bloat. More »

Must See HDTV (March 12th - 18th)

Community
After an all-too-long midseason hiatus, everyone's favorite group of community college misfits returns on Thursday. Community has a significant online following that reacted noisily to its sudden disappearance from NBC's schedule a few months ago, although if so many people are watching it, you gotta wonder why the network seems like it's in such a hurry to press the cancel button. Oh yeah, it's NBC, the people the ruined Heroes.
(March 15th, NBC, 8PM)

Frozen Planet
The latest series from the Discovery/BBC team up that brought you Planet Earth starts airing Stateside Sunday night so queue up the DVR and prepare to be wowed by nature. As usual, there is a downside -- the British narration by Sir David Attenborough is not in place for the US audiences, swapped out for Alec Baldwin. Check after the break for a quick preview clip featuring the underwater "Icy Finger of Death" and a standard trailer.
(March 18th, Discovery, 8PM)

March Madness
College hoops will be in effect all week on CBS and various Turner owned networks, with the 68-team tournament kicking off Tuesday night and continuing through three weekends of single elimination ball. Kentucky is the clear favorite to take it all, but with an odd mix of young/talented and older/experienced teams, this could be anyone's year.
(All Week, CBS, TNT, TBS, TruTV)

American Nightmare Extends the Alan Wake Mythology

I don’t watch horror films, not since a viewing of The Thing when I was about 10 and having nightmares for weeks. However there was something about Alan Wake that hooked me in. I found that, now a grownup (or so I am told), I could really enjoy the shocks and chills the game threw [...]

DARPA Director Bolts Pentagon for Google [Google]

Darpa director Regina Dugan will soon be stepping down from her position atop the Pentagon's premiere research shop to take a job with Google. Dugan, whose controversial tenure at the agency lasted just under three years, was "offered and accepted at senior executive position" with the internet giant, according to Darpa spokesman Eric Mazzacone. She felt she couldn't say no to such an "innovative company," he adds. More »

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

howsecureismypassword
We've all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that's hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won't hurt either.

That's a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they're important.

It's basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from "weak" to "strong", it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That's a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered "rabbit", it came back with "your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly". "rabbit5" would take two hours, "$rabbit5" would take 38 days, and "$rabbitZ5" would take 237 years. It's quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.
